For Lent in 1724, the brotherhood of the Knights of the Sorrowful Virgin in Naples commissioned a two-voice Stabat Mater from the famous composer Alessandro Scarlatti. His patrons soon deemed it out of fashion, and a few years later it was replaced by Pergolesi's famous version.
