The long history of the still life in the West, which began in Antiquity, continued with varying fortunes in the Middle Ages and underwent contrasting developments in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, continues vigorously well into the future.

In the nineteenth century, there were few painters who, even if they had many other subjects to inspire them, did not practise this genre, which followed European artistic developments: neoclassicism, romanticism, realism, eclecticism, naturalism, impressionism, post-impressionism, symbolism... But curiously, there are few overviews on this subject, despite its richness, as if the extraordinary effervescence of the previous two centuries had monopolised research.

Yet there are many artists, both famous and little-known, who worked in this field: Géricault, Courbet, Manet, Gauguin and Cézanne, as well as Berjon, Vollon, Regnault, Ribot and Bazille.

The twentieth century in turn seized on this tried-and-tested genre, making it its own and turning it into a major medium for its creations by completely renewing it. From Picasso to Warhol, the still life has been the subject of many changes, both in form and meaning.

Still life has not finished surprising us...
