How many poets and kings have formed their taste by the yardstick of this biblical fresco, from which the name of God is absent, composed by Solomon? Its ramifications are numerous, even in courtly lyricism, among the Petrarchans and the Ronzardians.

Six voix dans la nuit explores another path, through Marian poetry: the programme Flos florum, "flower of flowers", alternates passages from the Canticle in Hebrew, sung according to traditional Jewish cantillation, with pieces dedicated to the Virgin, the mystery of conception, and the fruit of the rose, which is none other than Jesus.
The themes are familiar: the walled garden, the wound caused by a glance, the deafening beauty of the young woman... But alternating the original text with Ceballos's Hortus conclusus, Britten's Rosa mystica or Bouzignac's Vulnerasti cor meum offers a new reading: it creates a disconcerting parallel between the sensual love of the Cantique's lover and the mystical love of Mary. This programme includes a commission from the ensemble: an arrangement for six voices of Campra's magnificent Tota pulchra es.
