Around the year one thousand, the region was covered with "a white robe of churches", according to the monk chronicler Raoul Glaber. From Fontenay Abbey, a Unesco World Heritage site, to Clos de Vougeot built by the Cistercian monks, from Meursault’s Leper House for the sick to the Basilica of Notre Dame de Beaune inspired by Cluny, Burgundy’s Romanesque art, with its broken barrel vaults and sculpted capitals, produces great bright naves and treasures of sculpture.
