On the road to more responsible tourism

Concerned today about preserving the destination For tomorrow's visitors

As a Tourist Office, we are delighted to help as many people as possible discover the riches of the Pays Beaunois. But above all, this mission aims to preserve what makes it so authentic and attractive: its vineyards, bocage landscapes, architectural and winegrowing heritage, as well as its traditions. Our role is to inspire and support visitors and those involved in tourism alike in aresponsible approach, by promoting practices that respect the environment. Through our recommendations, we highlight the local initiatives that make the difference, so that everyone can contribute, in their own way, à preserve this magnificent territory.

Our actions and commitments to more sustainable tourism

Sustainable tourism is everyone's business, and we're all getting involved!

And at the Beaune and Pays Beaunois Tourist Office, we have decided to take the path of tourism that is more respectful of our beautiful region. In practical terms, this means taking simple but effective action with our visitors.

1- Gourd friendly, we say yes!

Encouraging the reduction of plastic waste

In France, around 10 billion bottles are sold every year, but only 30% are actually recycled, with the rest ending up in landfill or in the environment. As you can see, the plastic water bottle is a packaging waste with a high environmental impact. With this in mind, the Tourist Office has joined the #gourdefriendly movement by registering 6 of its 7 reception desks. The principle? Fill passers-by’s water bottles for free. They come to our reception desks to fill their water bottles, and thus say goodbye to plastic bottles. Not only is it good for the planet, it’s also good for their wallets 😉. To find public fountains and #gourdefriendly establishments in the area, see the map.

2- Cigarette butts and chewing gum are a no-no.

Keeping public spaces clean

We are making à available, free of charge, in each of our reception desksboîtes à petits déchets, which are very useful in fighting against pollution caused by mégots and chewing gum. A small action that makes a big difference! And what’s more, visitors leave with a souvenir, what a Beaune idée!

3- Supporting major local initiatives.

Helping to preserve the destination

We support the actions and initiatives carried out by the Communautération Beaune Côte&Sud with large-scale projects such as the Plan Climat Air Énergie Territorial (PCAET), an ambitious plan to réduire émissions de gaz à effet de serre et s’adapter au changement climatique.

We are delighted to welcome 2.5 million visitors every year

That’s no mean feat! But it also presents our destination with major challenges in terms of sorting and waste management. To this end, we have carried out a project in partnership with Beaune Côte et Sud and CITEO   on the réduction of waste from tourist accommodation.Since we believe it is important to raise awareness among our visitors and encourage them to take action to promote co-responsible tourism, our hoteliers are ambassadors for our more virtuous destination.

What is the PCAET?

Territorial Climate Air Energy Plan

The PCAET is a strategic roadmap designed to address the region’s climate and energy challenges. It aims to:

    • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions
    • Improve air quality;air quality
    • Enhance the energy efficiency

  • Support local production of renewable energy
  • Enhance the energy efficiency

  • Adapting the region to the effects of climate change

This is a comprehensive framework for action that mobilises local authorities, businesses, associations and citizens, with a long-term horizon but actions that have an impact today.

Tourism at the heart of the transition

The tourism sector also has a significant environmental impact. That’s why the Tourist Office is actively involved in integratingthe challenges of the PCAET into its practices and recommendations. We want to make the Pays Beaunois an exemplary destination in terms of ecological transition. And we are proud, as a Tourist Office, to be its ambassadors to visitors and professionals alike.

4- Preserving natural treasures

Raising public awareness

Natura 2000

The sites Natura 2000 of the Arrière-Côte de Beaune and Dijon protect exceptional biodiversity while harmoniously integrating local activities. A number of hiking trails cross these protected areas, providing a great opportunity to discover this unique natural heritage while respecting its specific features. The Natura 2000 site stretches across 85 communes, targeting the preservation of rare ecosystems, in particular species such as the Peregrine Falcon and the Horned Goose. This project enables a balanced, integrated management grant protection of biodiversity and human activities.

Étangs d'Or Nature Reserve

The Réserve des Étangs d’Or represents a preserved area of biodiversity. This local initiative helps to protect the flora and fauna in a sensitive ecosystem, and is part of the joint efforts of the Office and its partners to promote the ecological development of the Beaune region. In Burgundy, as everywhere else, every gesture counts, and we are there to guide visitors towards a day that is as pleasant as it is co-responsible. <So, are you ready to travel differently?

Our commitments to a sustainable destination

A responsible tourist office

It all starts with simple, everyday actions that we take together:

  • We monitor our consumption: like at home, via dashboards to identify areas for improvement.
  • “This isn’t Versailles!”: adopt low-energy lighting, reduce heating and air conditioning, and put an end to standby!
  • We’re reducing our digital impact: we’re also sorting our email inboxes, servers and files.
  • Farewell to plastic bottles! We’re taking our best mug or our best water bottle, and we’re sorting it!

A new way to get around

Our mobility choices are designed to limit our carbon footprint:

  • 3 kilometres on foot … For short journeys, we use our feet or the handlebars.
  • For longer distances: the train (because we love the SNCF voice)
  • And when it’s really … long: we take the car. With the purchase of two electric cars powered by green energy and a hybrid vehicle, we’re plugged in!

Greener communication

We work hand in hand with our regional printers to reduce the impact of our media:

  • Reducing paper print runs.
  • Local printing (Bourgogne-Franche-Comté), with végétal inks, PEFC paper and Imprim’Vert certification.
  • Plastic-free packaging: only paper rings.
  • No subcontracting, for better environmental control.

Our website incorporates aneacute;co mode that limits the loading of multimedia content to lighten the pages and reduce their energy consumption.

A more local and responsible shop

We can’t sell our destination without supporting local production. So we:

  • Gradually reduce products made outside Burgundy.
  • Prioritise handcrafted or co-owned items.

Involving our partners and visitors

Because change is built together, we are inviting our partners and visitors to get involved with us:

  • Awareness kit, resources and information meetings on the ecological transition.
  • Promotion of sorting instructions and “Boîtes à petits déchets” available free of charge at our information offices and certain partners.
  • “Gourde Friendly”movement: let’s encourage reusable water bottles!
  • Welcome mo with simple gestures to adopt during the day.

Cooperating and enhancing

Let’s act well, let’s act together To do this, we are putting in place:

  • Leading working groups dedicated to sustainable development.
  • Promoting committed service providers, for a strong and responsible local network.
