A great family celebration

There’s something for everyone this November weekend at the Festivinales. Grown-ups can visit the wine cellars or indulge in the snail or Burgundy beef stalls at the gourmet market, while the little ones twirl around as the folk groups pass by. And the whole family can enjoy themselves at the funfair set up on Place Madeleine.

The Wine Sale in question

  • Who owns the Domaine Viticole des Hospices de Beaune?

The Hospices Civils de Beaune own the Domaine Viticole des Hospices de Beaune. This is the city of Beaune’s hospital institution, and has been since 1443, when Nicolas Rollin and Guigone de Salins founded the Hôtel-Dieu. Find out the incredible story of this couple who revolutionised hospital care in Beaune and Burgundy.

  • What is the auction record for the Hospices de Beaune?

It was at the 162nd Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction in 2022 that all records were broken:

    • 32 million Euros (29,788,500€ excluding fees) for all 802 pieces sold. This is not only the record for the Beaune sale, but also for a charity wine auction worldwide.
    • 810,000 Euros for the charity auction (pièce des présidents), supported by the two présidents: Benoît Magimel and Flavie Flament.
  • Which charities benefited from the record sale of the Charity Coin?

The incredible sum of €810,000 was donated to two associations dedicated to helping children:

  • Who won the exceptional charity coin auction in 2022?

The pièce de charité or pièce des Présidents had a very special symbolism for the 162nd edition of the Hospices de Beaune Wine Sale. The death of Louis-Fabrice Latour, a Burgundian winegrower and emblematic figure of Burgundy winegrowing, a month before the sale was a particularly poignant event for the winegrowing community of Beaune and the Beaune region. It was to pay tribute to him that the Louis Latour and Joseph Drouhin houses, along with other Burgundy wine houses (Badet Clément, Albert Bichot, Groupe Boisset, Bouchard Père et Fils, Champy, Chanson, Joseph Drouhin, Faiveley, Louis Jadot, Olivier Leflaive, Patriarche and Veuve Ambal), have won the auction for the Corton Grand Cru, offered in a barrel specially made by the Maison Latour cooperage. This generous approach is in keeping with the tradition of charity that has underpinned the values of the Hospices de Beaune since it was founded in 1443. In 2024, the charity room was acquired by Mr Alaor Pereira Lino, a partner in Anima Vinum, for €360,000. This 164th edition is the 2nd best-seller!

  • What is the average price of a piece of wine sold at auction in Beaune?

One bottle of wine is equivalent to 228 litres of wine. The 802 pieces of wine were sold for 32 million euros. This gives an average price per bottle of 39,900 euros, or 175 euros per litre, or around 131 euros per bottle. The Hospices de Beaune label is a guarantee of a rare and sought-after product. The highest bids were for pieces of Bontrachet Grand Cru, Cuvée Dames des Flandres. 300,000 euros were needed for buyers to win the bids for 5 bottles of this exceptional wine.2023 confirms the interest in this extraordinary wine, with the price up 14%. 2023 was slightly below the historic record set in 2022. The average price of a litre of Burgundy wine, including red and white wines, was ‘only’ 136 euros, or 107 euros per bottle.

  • Who are the sponsors of the Pièce des Présidents for the 165th Wine Auction in 2025?

The godparents for the year 2025 are not yet known. The representatives of disability associations and intelligent technologies will be public by September 2025. In 2024, we were treated to the presence of two shock and charm duo to motivate buyers to bid on the Pièce de Charité on 17 November :

    • Eva Longoria
    • Jean Reno
    • Zabou Breitman
    • Dominic West
