Contemporary art in Burgundy is lived day by day

For several years now, the contemporary art scene has been in full bloom; Beaune and around. In an area where history can be read in every stone, the contemporary art shakes up the codes. S’then inscribes a dynamic dialogue between tradition and modernity. Beaune offers multiple opportunities to discover contemporary art. The art galleries in the heart of the town (such as the Galerie de l’Hôtel de Saulx) but also its Musée des Beaux-Arts are traditional places to meet the œuvres. Projects such as Art in Situ or Imaginaires Kreatifs from l’Hôtel-Dieu – Hospices de Beaune give à admire œuvres in more unusual places, in direct contact with the bâti and wine heritage.

A life in relief from London to Beaune

Currently the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Beaune is hosting the 1st French retrospective of the  British sculptor Paul DAY : « Une vie en relief, de Londres à Beaune » (until’21 September 2025). Around a hundred of his œuvres (or maquettes of the originals), some of which cèl&e brent Burgundy and its harvest scènes. Paul Day is renowned for his monumental sculptures in numerous public and private spaces around the world. One of the most famous is “The Meeting Place” exhibited in London’s Saint Pancras Station. You can admire a statue of the same theme, a couple kissing, in front of the entrance to the Mary of Burgundy Gate where the Museum of Fine Arts is located. A specialist in the art of trompe-l’œil and the play on perspective, Paul Day works mainly in terracotta and bronze. His œuvres, often in bas-relief, are brought to life by strikingly realistic figures. Watching them plunges you intonarrative and motional scenes. The show recalls the théâtres illusionists.

Street art in the 15th century

At the Hôtel-Dieu – Hospices de Beaune, the Street Art  come to re&eve;this heritage, 6 centuries old. Ever since it was built, the hospital has been closely linked to art. Artists have accompanied its development over the centuries. The most emblematic work on the premises is Rogier van der Weyden’s Final Judgement Polyptych. In 2025, in the format of a « triptych » artistic, 3 artists succeed one another to enliven the visiting site with œStreet Art works. The exhibition Imaginaires Kreatifs « Visions hospitalières, visions minérales » brings you an inérient experience à Beaune. 30 œuvres shake up the site’s historic identity. What if the new Rogier van der Weyden* ét were graffiti artists? It’s a real gamble to bring street art to a historic site. This project is part of the 10th anniversary of the inclusion of the Climates of the Burgundy vineyards on UNESCO’s World Heritage List with La Karrière de Villars-Fontaine.

When you explore the Pays Beaunois and its villages off the beaten track, you’ll discover a whole new side to them. Walls vibrate, heritage takes on a new face and vineyards become museums. Art lovers will enjoy discovering bold, engaging and unusual works of art as they make their way along the Route des Grands Crus or through the villages.

Art and wine on the Route des Grands Crus

The 4th edition of Art in Situ – Route des Grands Crus offers a tour of 37 contemporary œuvres. They are spread across 10 locations in wine-growing Burgundy. Chablis, some domains in Beaune, the Caves Patriarche, the Hôtel le Cep are transformed into open-air gallery. 19 artists exhibit abstract paintings, sculptures,art installations. This cultural interface between contemporary art and the terroir offers a unique immersive experience and an inventive experiment.

At Nolay, joli village des Hautes Côtes de Beaune takes place every 2 years the Biennale Interactive de Sculpture Contemporaine. A not-to-be-missed event for contemporary art in Burgundy, the BISCB is an exhibition of œuvres that invites à sharing with the public a thought, an expression, émotions and expériences. Somewhere between entertainment and observation of the world and living things, an artist’s interpretation is always a moment of questioning, emotion and visual pleasure.

Chagny

On the canal of a City of Art

Chagny, a town of art and stopovers, particularly for its river tourism, is sure to charm you. Regular exhibitions take place at the Office de Tourisme. The  Galerie d’Art contemporain de Pietro Sparta has been exhibiting renowned artists,Niele Toroni or Christian Boltanski, for example, since 1982. The arte povera and the minimalist are two artistic currents that you will find regularly in this gallery far from the Parisian classics. Pietro Sparta has also contributed to the installation of 4 contemporary works in this pretty Saône et Loire commune, crossed by the Canal du Centre: – Weinede Frau Nr VI by Thomas SCHÜTTE (2017) – Pont de Paris II by Olivier MOSSET (2014) – Et Sous les étoiles – Le Livre près de l’eau by Lawrence WEINER (1994) – L’Octagon for Saint Eloi by Richard SERRA (1991) A brochure is available at the Tourisme Office.
