chateau-germolles-230 km south of Beaune and close to Chagny, a visit to the Château de Germolles, the best-preserved residence of the Dukes of Burgundy, offers a rich evocation of ducal court life in the late Middle Ages.
In 1380, Philippe le Hardi, Duke of Burgundy, offered the château to his wife Marguerite de Flandres. Originally austere, this “fortified house” was transformed into aluxurious country residence by the Duchess, who invited the finest artists of the Burgundian school. This edifice, a testament to the refinement of the princely court on the eve of the Renaissance, is today in a unique state of conservation.

These form part of the corps de logis, a vast 3-storey ensemble, which is the highlight of the tour. It offers a faithful glimpse of the splendor of the Burgundian court. A visit to the gardens, redesigned in the late 19th century in a Romantic styleEnglish, is a pleasant extension of the tour.
