Every summer, Beaune comes alive to the sound of the greatest masterpieces of Baroque music. The Beaune International Baroque Opera Festival attracts music lovers and enthusiasts of early music to Burgundy in an exceptional setting. This year, the 2026 edition explores the theme of ‘The Afterlife’, guiding audiences through the works of composers such as Bach, Pergolesi and Monteverdi.

A world-renowned festival for over 40 years

Founded in 1982, the Beaune International Baroque Opera Festival has established itself as a key event in the world of Baroque music. Musicians specialising in 17th- and 18th-century music look forward to performing each year in the wine capital of Burgundy.

The festival’s founders, Anne Blanchard and Kader Hassissi, have made it one of the most important events in the world of classical music in Europe. Their ambition was to breathe new life into the great operatic works. It was a matter close to the hearts of this inspired couple to preserve the authenticity of the original scores and remain faithful to them.

The programme features operas, as well as oratorios, sacred music and recitals: in Beaune, the voice reigns supreme and there is something to suit every taste!

The concert venues, which are among the most beautiful in Burgundy, also play a major part in the charm of this music festival.

A tribute to early music

For the past 40 years, every edition of the Festival has showcased operas by Baroque composers such as Monteverdi, Handel, Vivaldi and Rameau. The contrasting sounds of Baroque music resonate with either power or gentleness in the courtyard of the Hôtel-Dieu at the Hospices de Beaune.

The Festival’s organisers are committed to showcasing historically informed performances of the works on the programme. Period instruments are used, and the performances remain faithful to the original interpretations: a musical journey through time is guaranteed.

Beaune’s heritage in the service of classical music

Beaune’s architectural heritage plays a major part in the magic of the Festival. On Saturday evenings, the operas are performed in the famous Cour de l’Hôtel-Dieu at the Hospices de Beaune. The natural acoustics enhance every note played. The balmy summer evening, the light gradually fading, and the splendour of the venue all contribute to this extraordinary musical experience.

Other performances take place indoors, at the Collégiale Notre-Dame. This jewel of medieval heritage offers an intimate and solemn atmosphere.

Internationally renowned artists

meet up in Beaune

Over the years, the Festival has welcomed renowned conductors and soloists, including William Christie, Marc Minkowski, Jordi Savall, Emmanuelle Haïm, Andreas Scholl and Cecilia Bartoli. These artists, specialists in the Baroque repertoire, contribute to the event’s reputation and artistic excellence.

Beaune is also the place where the great artists of tomorrow make their mark! Every year, the Festival gives young early music ensembles and promising singers the chance to shine.

Edition 2026

A new lease of life for the Beaune Festival

The 44th edition of the Beaune International Baroque Opera Festival promises to be one of profound renewal. Under the leadership of its new artistic director, Maximilien Hondermarck, the event retains its long-standing excellence whilst challenging its own conventions through several major premieres.

The most spectacular change is undoubtedly the move to a staged production: for the very first time in its more than forty-year history, the festival is moving away from the strict concert format to stage its first fully staged opera. It is at the Théâtre de Beaune that audiences will discover this new production, a Venetian operatic adaptation of Molière’s *L’Avare* conducted by Vincent Dumestre and his ensemble, Le Poème Harmonique. For the occasion, the traditional boundary between the orchestra pit and the stage is completely blurred, with the musicians in costume and integrated directly into the heart of the set design.

This commitment to inclusivity is also reflected in an unprecedented focus on families. The festival is creating its first show for young audiences with *Peau d’Âne* at the Lanterne Magique, allowing the very youngest to discover the sounds of the viola da gamba through Perrault’s fairy tale.

To give an overarching coherence to these three weeks of music, the artistic direction is also introducing a new structural element: a single thematic thread, entitled ‘L’Au-delà’, which will guide audiences through major works by Bach, Pergolesi and Monteverdi, and which will resonate with a special tribute to the composer John Dowland to mark the 400th anniversary of his death.

Finally, the festival experience extends beyond the concert halls thanks to new immersive and engaging formats. Festival-goers will be able to combine architectural heritage, wine culture and music through guided musical tours of venues usually closed to the public, commented wine tastings at the Union des Maisons de vins de Grande Bourgogne, or pre-concert dinners served directly in the courtyard of the Hôtel-Dieu. A breath of modernity and conviviality that promises to bring Beaune to life throughout July.
