Refreshing ideas for your summer heatwaveCoolcation on the Route des Grands Crus

Coolcation on the Route des Grands Crus

When summer heats up, get away cool, without going far! Why not forget about crowded destinations, scorching beaches and air conditioners? Head for the Route des Grands Crus, where you can cool off naturally under the trees, in the cellars, on the water or in the shade of the hills. Between nature, heritage and simple pleasures, welcome to a new way of travelling: calmer, greener, cooler. Burgundy-style coolness.

Have you heard of "coolcation"?

Coined in 2020 in response to climate change, the term “coolcation” is a contraction of the words “cool” and “vacations”. It refers to a new way of travelling: turning to cool countries such as Sweden, Norway or Canada to escape recurring heatwaves, but also to cool, sustainable experiences. It’s a way of escaping the heat while enjoying the great outdoors.

01. The cellars

How would you like to become a bottle of wine for the duration of a visit?

When the temperature rises outside, the caves offer an unexpected refuge underground. These stone galleries naturally maintain a constant temperature of around 12 to 14°C, summer and winter alike. An invitation to discover the history of wine, the know-how of the winegrowers and the importance of time in the making of Burgundy’s greatest vintages At Chez Patriarche, you can walk through almost five kilometres of vaulted galleries. At Maison Bouchard Père & Fils, the cellars of Château de Beaune plunge to a depth of 10 metres, housing bottles that are over a century old. But visiting these cellars also means choosing a gentler form of tourism: no artificial air-conditioning, no energy-hungry infrastructures, just stone. Some organic or biodynamic wineries add an even more responsible dimension to the experience, combining tradition with respect for nature.

02. Swimming pools and ponds

A refreshing dip?

In the heart of the Beaune region, there are a number of pools and lakes where you can escape the summer heat. Municipal pools, landscaped beaches or lakes in the countryside: there’s something for everyone, whether you’re looking for a refreshing dip, a moment with the family or a relaxing break by the water. Don’t forget the natural swimming area at Beaune Côté Plage! This chlorine-free site, nestling in the heart of nature, relies on 100% natural filtration using plants and minerals. Perfect for bathing in fresh water, far from chemical products, while enjoying a green and relaxing setting.

Want to get moving?

Head for the lake at Montagny-lès-Beaune for a session of water sports! The Voile Libre club in Montagny offers introductory sailing lessons, catamaran and paddleboat hire, as well as courses to suit all levels. And for the more inquisitive, the Club de canoë kayak en pays Beaunois takes you to the rhythm of the paddle. It’s a great way to get moving, while respecting the environment: no engine, no noise, just the lapping of the water. To extend the experience, head for Terre de Nature Côte-d’Or (TNCO). This leisure centre, nestling a stone’s throw from the Premeaux-Prissey lake, combines sport and relaxation! With family or friends, you can enjoy a wide range of activities, including paddle-boarding, pedal-boating and water-skiing, as well as trampolines and inflatable structures for the younger ones. On the ground level, you’ll find a petanque area, mini-golf, table tennis and table football. And for a well-deserved break, why not take a seat at the snack bar with its terrace on stilts, or stay overnight at the 3-star campsite, ideal for a pressure-free weekend in the great outdoors.

03. Hiking

Le cirque du Bout du Monde

You don’t have to travel to the other side of the world to enjoy a truly refreshing escape. Head for the Cirque du Bout du Monde, where waterfalls and forest meet for a moment of pure nature. This Natura 2000 listed site invites you to take a stroll along its shady paths, perfect for discovering the local flora and fauna. Keep your eyes peeled for peregrine falcons, bats and butterflies in these protected areas. To make the most of the site, take the signposted path that circles the cirque in a 3km loop, accessible to all, and let yourself be lulled by the murmur of waterfalls and birdsong. The Cirque du Bout du Monde is an unmissable stop-off for a breath of fresh air.

Le Chemin des Bois

Circuit n°4

Want to explore the surrounding area without too much effort and sheltered from the heat? Take the road to Savigny-lès-Beaune and follow the Chemin des Bois, a very easy, shady and relaxing trail along the Rhoin. Lasting around 1 hour 45 minutes and covering 5km5, this family-friendly walking trail takes you along the Rhoin, which rises at Bouilland. Bouilland, the Fontaine Froide waterfall site and a tufa rock created naturally by the loss of carbon dioxide from the limestone.
